Spain golf holidays - Los Arqueros

Los Arqueros Benahavís, Andalusia

Los Arqueros Golf Course was designed by Seve Ballesteros, this championship 18 hole, par 71, 5306m golf course was opened in 1991. Many of the fairways are bordered by steep ravines and the golf course is dotted with several streams, water hazards and strategically positioned trees, carefully positioned to demand careful calculation and accuracy rather than risk taking. The original layout of Los Arqueros offers impeccably kept fairways and spectacular scenery and an interesting feature is the S shaped bunker at the 9th hole created as a signature mark by the designer. The design thinking behind Los Arqueros Golf was to lay out a golf course which closely followed the contours of the land and was in harmony with the natural setting. It is an idea, which Seve exploited to the maximum when designing the front and back nine holes, each with its own distinct personality. The result is a golf course which presents a challenge for the experienced golfer and is a real test of skills for beginners.  (...)

The narrow fairway of this hole curves all the way down to sea level.Santa Clara Golf is designed accordance the latest USGA specifications of a Park-land course. Spain golf holidays - Atalaya Golf Old Course

Atalaya Golf Old Course Estepona, Andalusia

Atalaya golf course owes much of its charm and beauty to the fact that it was created back in 1968, before the rash of golf urbanisation development that has seen golf courses spring up all over the Costa del Sol. It was a slower pace of life in those days, when the design of a golf course was the priority rather than packing in the apartments on the edge of every fairway. Skilled ground staff have not only maintained the quality of the golf courses over the years, but created a perfect ambience around the clubhouse with pretty fountains surrounded by richly-coloured beds of flowers. The fact that it is a members’ club open to green fee paying guests gives it a distinctive edge over its newer, flashier competitors. There’s always a convivial buzz around the clubhouse where members and guests alike are made welcome on the terrace or in the bar. Easy to find, on the road to Benahavis, its central location, close to the beach and within a short drive from some of the region’s most luxurious hotels, make it a favourite venue for visitors. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Sierra Blanca mountains, its two magnificent 18-hole courses - the Atalaya Old Course and the Atalaya New Course - are lined with mature eucalyptus trees, cactus and palms and pink and white azaleas that fill the air with an unforgettable and intoxicating scent. (...)

Mijas Golf is located at the Costa del Sol 4 kilometres of the N340 towards Alhaurin el Grande close to Fuengirola. The Los Lagos golf course, designed by Robert Trent Jones, was founded in 1976. Although the wide fairways and light rough provide this course a friendly character at first sight, one should be aware of the large bunkers and multiple water hazards formed by eight lakes! The par five 5th hole, 564 m, is one of the longest holes at the Costa del Sol and Andalucía. The Los Olivos golf course, also designed by Robert Trent Jones, was inaugurated in 1984. This course is shorter than Los Lagos and water hazards are less in play. Nevertheless los Olivos is not easier to beat. The fairways and greens are smaller and there is more vegetation and undulation. The Mijas Golf Resort has an unique entrance, an American style wide road swirls through the fairways and greens towards the clubhouse and the reputable Hotel Byblos Andaluz. (...)

Santana Golf Club Mijas, Andalusia

Santana Golf & Country Club is an 18 Hole golf course par 72 of approx. 6203 metres (just under 7000 yards) in length, set in 138 acres of picturesque parkland. The golf course, sympathetically laid out by the architect Cabell B. Robinson, is set in a former avocado plantation. The final result is a magnificent course with wide and well defined fairways on level terrain, hence easily walkable, where water features play an important albeit not excessive part in the overall design. Each hole has two championship tees and two tees for general play for both men and ladies– wide and well manicured putting greens surrounded by strategically placed bunkers, filled with sand produced from crushed marble. Buggy paths are provided throughout the golf course, beautifully integrated between the rows of fruit trees. Santana Golf course is technically speaking a demanding golf course as the unique design of each hole is intended to give a continuous challenge, even for the more experienced player. The layout of the greens, well protected by greenside bunkers, as well as the many water hazards spread throughout the golf course, will challenge every golfer and require good course management as well as the use of every golf club in the bag. It is difficult to speak of a signature hole at Santana Golf as they all have something special to offer. The long Par-4 18th is one of the most demanding finishing holes along the coast according to the designer, with the lake along the right hand side and a narrow approach to the green. The 4th hole can only be defined with one word: spectacular. The views from the tee are magnificent and the ‘Campillos’ stream provides a challenging approach to the green; or what about the 8th hole, with a length of 595 metre (650 yards) considered to be the longest hole of the Costa del Sol and favouring the longer hitter; not to forget the 12th Par 3, playing downhill, with a very large undulating green, many a golfer would be happy to walk away with a three here... One of the most outstanding features of Santana Golf is without a doubt the variety in design, as each and every hole is differentiated by its own characteristics. (...)
